Clean up California’s trucks and buses – Support SB 1204

June 10, 2014

Dear friend,

Please join me in taking this action from the Union of Concerned Scientists urging the California State Senate to vote for Senate Bill 1204, which will help clean up California’s trucks and buses.

California’s economy depends on shipping goods to market, but the constant flow of diesel trucks on our highways is bad for our health and our climate. The California State Senate is poised to vote on a bill that could help to modernize California’s freight system by supporting advanced vehicles that dramatically reduce or eliminate tailpipe emissions.

Urge your state senator to vote for SB 1204, which will develop much-needed technology and provide incentives for electric and low-emission trucks, buses and other diesel-powered equipment, using funds that have already been set aside for reducing our global warming emissions.

Advanced technologies for these vehicles are promising, but we need this program to ensure that these solutions are fully developed and commercially adopted.

The bill also gives priority to projects in low-income communities, where the health impact of truck and bus pollution is most severe. Some of these communities, such as those in the San Joaquin Valley and Los Angeles Basin, have some of the most extreme air pollution in the nation, and air pollution from freight transport is a major factor.

The California State Senate will vote on this important legislation in the next few days. Act now to help reduce emissions that cause global warming, lower our fuel consumption, and improve air quality.
