Bernal Heights tenant with huge rent increase addresses Airbnb situation

A San Francisco woman, who found herself in the middle of a media firestorm this week after sharing news of her landlord’s rent increase on Facebook, says she hosts Airbnb guests in her two-bedroom Bernal Heights apartment.

But 46-year-old Deb Follingstad says the $6,755 rent increase from her landlord Nadia Lama has nothing to do with her Airbnb activity.

“I don’t think Nadia even knew I was renting the room on Airbnb,” Follingstad says. “The rent increase and me being forced to move isn’t about Airbnb.”

SFGate has reached out to Nadia Lama’s attorney for comment and hasn’t received a response…

While tenants in single-family homes and condos are protected from evictions, they’re not protected from rent increases. As a result, landlords can force a tenant out by raising the rent to an unaffordable price and avoid paying moving costs that start at $5,200 per person and go up depending on factors ranging from number of children to a tenant’s disability….
