Housing Activists Clash with California Lawmakers over SB50

Nancy Skinner claims that SB 50 is necessary to reverse years of racist zoning policies. This is a favorite argument the YIMBYs make that gets no traction with the communities they claim to support with this argument.

According to Skinner, “Single family is exclusionary zoning. It was designed to exclude poor people, people of color, to exclude whatever people that community didn’t want.”

Well, it didn’t work out that way. If she thinks poor people and people of color are only living in multi-unit complexes she is sadly mistaken. She should visit some of the single family communities to see who lives there before she makes that claim.

Most of the single family neighborhoods in San Francisco that SB50 wants to up-zone are multi-cultural neighborhoods that were built for working people to own. The residents in these neighborhoods are wary of gentrification and displacement and oppose SB50…(more)
